Card reader

Additional security within Online Banking

A card-reader is a security device used within Online Banking which looks a lot like a small, hand-held calculator. It works by simply reading the security chip on your Visa Debit card. The card-reader provides additional security by generating a unique code that you need to enter into Online Banking to complete the following transactions:

  • Set up or change a single or regular payment
  • Make a payment for the first time online
  • Create or amend a Standing Order
  • Change the PIN or password you use to log into Online Banking
  • Change your mobile phone details

We will never ask you to use your card-reader to log in to Online Banking, and we will never phone you to ask for your card-reader details.

Using your card-reader for the first time

Before using your card-reader for the first time, you need to activate it online as follows:

  • Log in to Online Banking
  • Select 'Security' from the menu
  • In the 'Using a card-reader' section, select 'Enable a card-reader'
  • Follow the onscreen instructions to enable your card-reader

Download our card-reader guide which has instructions on how to use the device and authorise a transaction.
